NEWEST ARIZONA EXPANSION BRINGS

A FAN-FRIENDLY FOCUS TO THE WPSL

OKLAHOMA CITY (12/13/2024) — The Women’s Premier Soccer League confirmed today an expansion from the Peoria, Ariz. market has committed to a 2025 debut as an official member of the WPSL. Moving forward, the club will be referred to as WPSL PEORIA (AZ) until it has selected its official brand identity – an initiative that club executives are asking the Peoria community to contribute to in naming this new team.

“The WPSL is thrilled to expand opportunities for women in the suburban Phoenix area,” Matt Homonoff, WPSL deputy commissioner, said. “As one of the fastest growing metro areas in the country, and a true hotbed for player development, the future is bright there.”

Club executives’ mission for WPSL PEORIA (AZ) is to offer the highest level of women’s soccer in the state while providing family-friendly entertainment at affordable prices. The club is targeting Peoria Sports Complex to become its home venue for its 2025 inaugural season. The complex is the current spring training home to the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball (MLB).

“We look forward to providing a platform and competition structure for the innovative approach the club will bring to the field and community,” Homonoff said.

Arizona has long been a WPSL hotbed in the league’s tenure. In 2024, five Arizona-based clubs battled to unseat the Phoenix-based SC del Sol as reigning Desert Conference champions and national semifinalists. With more than a dozen colleges and universities with women’s varsity programs in Arizona and elite-level youth clubs in the metropolitan Phoenix area, WPSL PEORIA (AZ)  will feature a deep talent pool to build its inaugural roster.

Visit the club’s temporary website, arizonawomenssoccer.com, to vote for the team name and for other information about the WPSL’s newest Arizona-based club. A permanent website and social media channels will follow with the naming of the team.
