OHIO WELCOMES SIXTH WPSL TEAM FOR 2024 SEASON
TOLEDO, Ohio (Oct 3, 2023) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced today that Greater Toledo FC will compete next season as a 2024 expansion team. With the announcement, the league confirms Greater Toledo FC marks its sixth team in Ohio as the club joins WPSL sides in Cleveland, Columbus, and Dayton.
“The Women’s Premier Soccer League provides a unique opportunity to the Northwest Ohio area and also to our club for a true elite player development pathway,” Mike Aubry, Greater Toledo FC owner and executive director, said. “GTFC has always been about evolution and growth and the WPSL is the next logical step in our development as an organization of over 1,000 youth players.”
Founded in 1996 with six teams, Greater Toledo Futbol Club pursued its goal of creating a comprehensive soccer experience. Nearly three decades later, the club competes with 75 teams and 50 coaches on the foundation of three values – strength, unity, and discipline. Today, the club prepares for its upcoming WPSL debut by designing a platform where former Greater Toledo players can continue to nurture their passion for the game while also establishing a pathway for its current players.
Danny Fisher has been named the club's general manager and will bring extensive coaching knowledge to its WPSL side. The England native retains nearly 10 years of coaching experience with teams from the English Football League (EFL) before coming to the United States in 2006. Since then, Fisher has held positions with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) and local youth clubs. Additionally, Fisher holds a UEFA B License, an NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma, and an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma as well as serving as an instructor for NSCAA courses.
The club believes that the WPSL will serve as a developmental bridge between club and college soccer that will aid its players’ career advancement by progressing them to the next level physically, mentally, technically, and tactically which cements its mission of developing a total person through the correlation of life and soccer.
