BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Feb. 20, 2023) - The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced today that FC Birmingham will play this summer as a 2023 expansion and will compete in the Southeast Conference of the South Region – joining Atlanta Fire and Georgia Impact.

“As members of the Women’s Premier Soccer League this season, we are grateful for the opportunity to compete amongst some of the most talented women’s players in the region,” Doug Walk, FC Birmingham owner, said. “Our men’s first and second teams made a name for themselves, but we believe our ladies can be the fans’ favorite.”

The club originally prioritized the youth landscape and launched as Birmingham City FC Academy in 2018 before its rebranding to FCB Academy in 2021. In its commitment to growing the women’s game in the Birmingham area, FC Birmingham unveiled its women’s side in 2022 and competed that summer.

Now gearing up for its second women’s season, the club calls the acceptance to compete in the WPSL “an honor and a privilege to participate in a high-level competitive environment.”

“Our women’s team will now be reintroduced to the surrounding community providing them with a sense of belonging, ambition, and empowerment to take part in the game we all love called soccer,” Walk said. “We look forward to seeing what the new season brings our way and are overly excited to see what pops of talent we get to embrace.”
