THE WPSL INCREASES ITS FOOTPRINT IN UTAH WITH NEWEST 2022 EXPANSION TEAM

FARMINGTON, Utah (January 28, 2022) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced today, Utah Avalanche will join the league for the 2022 season. With the announcement, the Avalanche joins fellow Utah-based WPSL teams – Utah Arrows SC, Utah Red Devils and Utah Surf – out of the Salt Lake City metro area.

“We are super excited to join the WPSL,” Jimmie Powell, Utah Avalanche director of coaching, said. “It is a great league providing strong competition and we look forward to fielding a team that will see some of our many alumnae once again take the field wearing a Utah Avalanche jersey.”

Utah Avalanche was founded in 2001 by Jo Barney who still serves as an executive director in 2022. Upon inception, the club was organized as an elite all-girls club with the principal aim to provide the best athletes the opportunity to further their personal growth, both educationally and athletically, to the level their talent and efforts could take them.

Today, the Avalanche operates both boys and girls programs while having teams represent Utah in the Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) – winning national championships with both the ECNL and US Youth Soccer. The Avalanche organization encompasses over 125 teams, 1600 competitive players, and 2200 recreational players while operating the largest Top Soccer Program in Utah.

For its inaugural season, the Avalanche has named Trevor Wachsman as its WPSL team head coach. Wachsman spent 11 seasons with Utah State University’s women’s soccer program as associate head coach where his responsibilities predominately included scouting, recruiting, and tactical aspects.

“After spending many years working with women soccer players at Utah State, I am super excited to be named as the head coach of the Utah Avalanche WPSL team,” Wachsman said. “I believe we will have a good mix of current college players, college graduates and also some of the senior players currently involved in our youth program at Avalanche, which will provide great experience for them.”
