PANAMA CITY – The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced today, Florida Roots Futbol Club will join the league in the 2022 season. With the announcement, the club becomes the first expansion team for 2022.

"We are very honored to be a part of the WPSL," Jonathan Hammond, Florida Roots FC owner, president, and director of coaching said. "This league provides the opportunity for consistent comptition and gives our players a chance to compete against some of the best women soccer players in the world."

The club was originally formed under the Florida United Futbol Club branding in 2018 to provide an alternative for young soccer players who sought an advanced approach to skill development and training opportunities in the Panama City and Panama City Beach area.

With the desire to have a WPSL team part of their club strategy and the goal to build a roster with Panama City local-area players, instilled the need to represent their entire community through its name. The Florida Roots Futbol Club was chosen in 2020 to show unification between soccer and the community – something both players and fans can get behind and support.

The club’s mission to develop highly skilled, respectful, and competitive soccer players and the commitment to provide each player with the fundamentals to not only be successful on the field but also instill the discipline and structure needed when facing life’s endeavors, creates a harmony that Hammond believes will ultimately strengthen their community now and in the future.

The club will focus on positively impacting the development of female athletes in the Panama City community by providing soccer and life-enriching opportunities to women of all ages and playing abilities, to create a lifelong passion for the sport of soccer.

"We look forward to helping the women in our area develop and reach their goals and dreams of playing at the next level," Hammond said. "We're excited that joining the WPSL will give them that opportunity."

As a community-driven club committed to giving back and creating opportunities, Florida Roots FC will leverage their youth soccer program to conduct summer camps for the Panama City and Panama City Beach communities which are set to be orchestrated by the WPSL team coaches and players. The club also plans to host an annual high-level, competitive youth soccer tournament at Panama City Beach Sports Complex, with the inaugural tournament tentatively scheduled for September 2021.

The club will play its inaugural season at Tommy Oliver Stadium in Panama City – a newly renovated stadium with a grass field and seating capacity of over 7,000. Season tickets, game bundles, and individual game tickets will be sold.
