OKLAHOMA CITY – The Women’s Premier Soccer League has announced the schedule for the Southern Division of the Sunshine Conference today for the upcoming 2021 season. Formerly a lone conference in previous seasons, the Sunshine Conference was split into two divisions for 2021 to accommodate five new expansion teams and reduce travel concerns.
The Southern Division features teams in the Miami, Fort Myers, and Fort Lauderdale areas. The division will be represented by the Cape Coral Cyclones (Fort Myers), FC Surge (Miami), Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions FC (Fort Myers), Miami United FC, Sunrise Prime FC (Fort Lauderdale), and Team Boca Blast (Palm Beach).
The Southern Division will feature three new teams this season with Cape Coral and Miami United joining part of the 2021 expansion-team class and Sunrise Prime joining ahead of the 2020 cancelled season. Florida Gulf Coast Lions will compete in their fourth WPSL season.
FC Surge (2013) and Team Boca Blast (2012) near the decade mark as both set to compete in their eighth and ninth WPSL seasons. During the 2019 season, both finished the regular season undefeated with FC Surge finishing with a 6-0-2 record and Team Boca Blast finishing with a 6-0-1 record. The two split the end-of-season awards for the Sunshine Conference with Eva Castano Candela (FC Surge) and Elisha Holmes (Team Boca Blast) winning CO-Offensive Players of the Year. Team Boca Blast also won Defensive Player of the Year (Ryleigh Brown) and Coach of the Year (Rocky Orezzoli).
The schedule will kick off on May 22nd with Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions FC hosting FC Surge. The full season will consist of 30 matches with each team playing five matches at home and five on the road.
Sunrise Prime FC will host Miami United FC in their season openers on May 26th. Cape Coral Cyclones and Team Boca Blast will also start their seasons at home on June 2nd and June 9th.
