OKLAHOMA CITY – The Women’s Premier Soccer League has announced the schedule for the Desert Conference today for the upcoming 2021 season.
The Desert Conference will be represented by Atomic City FC (Las Vegas), El Paso Surf (El Paso, TX), and three teams out of southern Arizona, FC Arizona (Phoenix), FC Tucson, and SC del Sol (Phoenix).
The conference will feature a mix of new competitive and veteran teams.
Atomic City FC and El Paso Surf will both play their first season in the WPSL. Atomic City FC joined the league as part of the 2021 expansion-team class and El Paso Surf joined ahead of the 2020 season but was unable to participate due to the league’s decision to cancel the season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Another relatively new team, FC Arizona, will compete in their second WPSL season after joining the league in 2019.
FC Tucson will compete in their sixth season WPSL season and currently hold an overall 26-11-8 record. During the 2018 season, FC Tucson only recorded one loss in the regular season and reached the WPSL Regional Finals for the West Region after finishing second in the regular-season conference standings.
SC del Sol will play their first season under new branding after competing as Phoenix del Sol for the last decade. SC del Sol entered the league in 2010 to finish the regular season in first for the conference standings which earned them a spot in the playoffs, reaching the West Region WPSL Regionals. Most notably, Jessica McDonald, World Cup Champion and USWNT Veteran played for SC del Sol during the 2012 season as well as Dorian Baucom who played in 2019 and is currently on roster with Racing Louisville of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
The Desert Conference will play a 20 match schedule with each team playing four matches home and four matches on the road. The first match will feature Phoenix del Sol hosting El Paso Surf on May 29 and the season will play through early July.
