THE WPSL UNVEILS THE 2021 SCHEDULE FOR THE SOUTHERN DIVISION OF THE RED RIVER CONFERENCE

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Women’s Premier Soccer League has announced the schedule for the Southern Division of the Red River Conference today for the upcoming 2021 season. The Red River Conference features teams based in Oklahoma and Texas and is split between two divisions – Northern and Southern.

The Southern Division will be represented by AHFC Royals – out of Houston, Houston Aces, Lonestar SC – out of Austin, San Antonio Blossoms, and San Antonio Surf.

The biggest change among the Southern Division since the 2019 season is the return of the Houston Aces who initially played in the WPSL for the 2012-15 seasons, compiling a 34-11-5 record while outscoring opponents 110/46 and becoming back-to-back WPSL Championship Runner-ups in the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The Aces were set to return ahead of the 2020 season but were forced to hold out another year, like many others, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are honored to have the Houston Aces return to the WPSL,” WPSL president, Sean Jones, said. “The Aces have proven themselves over the years both on- and off-the-field and will only help strengthen the already strong Red River Conference.”

The AHFC Royals and San Antonio Blossoms both enter their third seasons with the league while Lonestar SC suits up for their fourth and San Antonio Surf returns for their second WPSL season.

The Southern Division will feature both a Houston and San Antonio crosstown home-and-home derby this season. The first part of the Houston derby will kick-off early in the season on June 4^th, with part-one of the San Antonio derby following on Jun 9^th. The matchup between the Aces and the Royals was set to be one of the league’s most anticipated matches entering the 2020 season, with both clubs winning a combined 26 of 32 regular season matches during the previous two seasons.

The season will consist of 20 matches with each team playing a balanced four-match home-and-away schedule. The first match of the season is set to kick-off on May 29^th as the Royals host Lonestar SC. The San Antonio Blossoms and Surf will also open the season at home when the Blossoms host the Aces on May 30^th and Surf hosting Lonestar SC on June 4^th.

The schedule is set to play through July 2nd.
