SAN DIEGO (Jan. 25, 2023) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced today that ALBION San Diego will officially rejoin the league for the 2023 season. With the announcement, the club confirms it will compete as ALBION San Diego in 2023 instead of its former ASC San Diego identity it held for the 2019 and 2021 seasons.

The club originally entered the WPSL as a 2019 expansion team and played two seasons before taking 2022 off – the 2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic.

“ALBION is excited to return to the WPSL [and] looks to really elevate top youth talent of the club while also bringing former players in college back and showcasing top pro talent in the woman’s game,” Noah Gins, ALBION San Diego CEO, said.

In its initial tenure with the league, ALBION provided profound competition to its Southern California competitors with a roster of elite pedigree, including the likes of U.S. Gold Olympian Natasha Kai, who played during its 2019 inaugural WPSL season. ALBION went on to finish second in its division of the So Cal Conference in 2021.

With ALBION’s return, the league strengthens its San Diego footprint and welcomes the high-level competition for 2023 WPSL fans have grown to expect from the region.

“This is a great opportunity for ALBION SC from a player development model because it immediately adds another layer of challenge and professionalism to what already exists in our current environment,” Jen Lalor, ALBION San Diego GA director, said. “It will allow our top players to compete at a higher level plus re-unite former Albion players back into our environment. We believe we have the tools in place to be a top contender in the WPSL.”

While no coaching announcements have been made, the club has confirmed that “it will be putting a strong leader in place that will embrace the youth [and]  allow them incredible opportunities while putting forth strong competition.”
