KANSAS CITY, KS (Jan. 11, 2023) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced today that Sunflower State FC will officially compete as an expansion team for the 2023 season. With the announcement, the WPSL sees additional growth in the Kansas City metro area.

“As an organization, we are extremely excited to join the Women’s Premier Soccer League,” Salvatore Sesti, Sunflower State FC team executive, said. “It is a great honor to be accepted [to the WPSL] and our women will bring class, passion, and fun to the league.”

Founded in 2019, Sunflower State FC embarks on its fifth year with a mission to provide a higher level of competition for the women of the Kansas City area and will employ the WPSL platform to achieve this success. The Sunflower State organization initially launched as a men’s club that now fields sides in both the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and Major Arena Soccer League 3 (MASL3).

By 2021, the club unveiled its women’s side to capitalize on the growing interest of the women’s game in the area – a market that Sesti described as “bursting at the gills with talented girls… who have [often] been overlooked.”

The club has announced Jose Ramos as its head coach for its inaugural WPSL season. The Brazilian native spent four years with a Brazilian professional youth academy before coming to the U.S. to play Division I soccer at the University of Albany. Following several injuries, Ramos transferred to MidAmerican Nazarene University (MNU) in Olathe, KS, to finish his education and has been an assistant coach with MNU’s women’s team since July 2021. Before taking his coaching position with MNU, Ramos played professional arena soccer with the KC Comets in the MASL.

“We are here because of the passion and ambition of coach Ramos who, we as owners, identified as an emerging star in women's coaching for his soccer intelligence, professionalism, vision, and empathy,” Sesti said. “It is because of him that our women will have an amazing soccer experience in Kansas City for years to come. “

Sunflower State FC influences more impact off the field because of its involvement with Youth R.I.S.E – an organization that is committed to “empowering youth and teaching life lessons through mentorship, education, and sport.” Through this partnership, the club offers soccer camps and free mentorships with Sunflower State players. Additionally, to establish continual opportunities, a club member will consistently be involved on the Youth R.I.S.E board.
