ST. CROIX, Minn. (Dec. 8, 2022) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced today that St. Croix SC has entered the league as an expansion team and will compete under the St. Croix Legacy name for the 2023 season. With the announcement, St. Croix joins seven other WPSL members in Minnesota as the league deepens its roots in the Upper Midwest.
“St. Croix is excited to join the WPSL for the 2023 season,” Nathan Klonecki, St. Croix SC executive director, said. “The WPSL has a great reputation, and we are excited to show the youth female players a higher level of soccer for the to strive to. We plan to keep the same mission, goals, and expectations that we have at St. Croix SC with the new St. Croix Legacy WPSL team.”
Founded in 1984, St. Croix Soccer Club has played a pivotal role in competitive youth soccer for nearly four decades. Within its organization, St. Croix fields nearly 1,000 competitive players through a developmental pathway that begins at age four. As a result, St. Croix has produced over 75 State Cup champions through its girls program alone and has aided 100+ players to reach the collegiate level in the past five years.
The club’s mission will remain the center of player opportunities from youth to adult as it strives to maintain an environment that embodies the core values of integrity, leadership, perseverance, respect, and teamwork while enhancing self-esteem, promoting self-confidence, and cultivating a lifelong passion for the game.
For its inaugural WPSL season, St. Croix has named Joaquin Izquierdo as its head coach. Izquierdo currently serves as the club’s technical director for its U9-U12 teams and holds a USSF A national coaching license.
