KANSAS CITY, Mo. (June 9, 2022) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League has confirmed Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League has a reserve team, Kansas City Current II, competing in the 2022 WPSL Season. This marks the continual relationship between the league and the NWSL with featured reserve sides competing on the WPSL platform over the last five seasons.

"As a club with the stated goal of becoming the best women’s football club in the world, development is vital,” Camille Levin Ashton, Kansas City Current general manager, said. “We are looking forward to the Current II joining the WPSL as we identify and develop the talent to help us reach our overall goals.”

Kansas City was awarded an NWSL expansion in December 2020 and played its first match in April 2021. In 2022, the franchise founded its reserve side in KC Current II which serves as its official affiliate team. The launch of KC Current II works to further develop women’s professional soccer in the Kansas City metro.

In its inaugural season, the NWSL reserve side is led by the Current’s Director of Soccer Operations, Huw Williams with a staff of assistants including Vasil Ristov and Colin Bulwich.

The club kicked off its 2022 campaign with two matches on the road by outscoring its opponents 19-0, including a 12-0 season opener. The Current II remain undefeated in its inaugural season with an 8-0 victory on June 4. Caroline Kelly is currently the league’s leading goalscorer with eight goals and has also recorded two assists. Other top players for the club include Lily Farkas and Brie Severns who recorded nine goals and three assists together.

Our coaching staff has stressed cohesiveness in terms of club identity, making sure our players play under similar principles that our first team does,” Williams said. “So far, we have been able to execute some of those while also beginning the process of identifying and developing talent to get players ready to compete at the highest level.”

Kansas City Current joins other NWSL franchises that has had or currently has a presence in the WPSL with reserve sides including NJ/NY Gotham Reserves, Chicago Red Stars, and OL Reign.
